Welcome to Berkshire, Vermont
|
Nestled in the rolling hills of Franklin County, Berkshire offers a quintessential Vermont experience—where the landscape is rugged, the history is deep, and the community is tight-knit. Whether you are a lifelong resident or a curious visitor, our town serves as a peaceful retreat defined by its agricultural roots and scenic vistas.
Our History & Geography Chartered on June 22, 1781, by Governor Thomas Chittenden, Berkshire was one of six towns authorized by the legislature as a way to raise money to supply Vermont's troops. The first man named in both the petition and the subsequent charter was William Goodrich of Stockbridge, Berkshire County, Massachussetts, a Captain in the militia which had marched to Lexington in 1775.
